Successful Traditional Heirloom Organic Pokkali Rice Farming
Successful and profitable Pokkali Harvesting was achieved in 2025 by several farmers in Ezhikkara, Kadamakkudy, Varappuzha and Alappuzha by adhering to timely and proper cultivation practices without using any fertilizers or pesticides validating the exceptionally nutrient rich and naturally organic Pokkali farmlands of coastal Kerala. Contrary to prevailing false narratives from local self government officials, coop banks, self appointed farmer representatives and vested interests of fisheries and tourism lobbies, these genuine farmers achieved successful harvest with:
No issues of farm flooding or climate change by adhering to timely summertime farm preparation
No issues of boundary chera breaches by adhering to timely summertime farm preparation
No issues of shortage of traditional heirloom Pokkali seeds for genuine farmers
Minimal to No issues of Nellikkozhi or other bird pests by adhering to timely summertime farm preparation
No issues of insect, farm rats or other rodent pests by adhering to timely summertime farm preparation
No shortage of labor for Ploughing, Sowing, Spreading, Harvesting and Threshing
No issues of market placement and pricing
Marketplace for upwards of Rs 100/Kg for seeds and Rs 200/Kg for traditional variety Pokkali rice (not hybrid Vyttila-x) exists today and is being actively expanded to reach upwards of Rs800/Kg with Public/Private Collaboration and Exports. Labor workforce upwards of 100+ in Ezhikkara alone are clamouring for more Pokkali farm work every year.
Pokkali farms kept intentionally fallow by farm owners for year round unlicensed Prawn Farming, must be leased to other farmers or entities who are able and willing to do genuine Pokkali farming. This enables rapid revival of fallow farms while providing job opportunities for the local farming community.
